This 3 day training event is for those working in Democratic Services, or Local Government in general, who wish to understand the environment in which they work and to develop skills and knowledge to effectively carry out their role.
Please note: this is not a residential course and accommodation is not included
Day 1: 9 January 2015
There will be some research activities set, in relation to participants' own authorities, for completion after day 1. These will be developed further and will form a discussion activity during the follow-on 2 days
Day 2: 26 January 2015
Day 3: 27 January 2015
To explore the local government environment, legal framework, decision-making and governance arrangements, including managing meetings and an overview of scrutiny.
This event will provide an opportunity to discuss and explore:
- the structure and functions of local government
- politial arrangements in local government
- role of elected Councillors and non-Councillors
- the legal framework and fundamentals of decision making
- law and management of meetings
- support for the scrutiny function
