Many of our courses can be adapted for in-house delivery and can be specifically tailored to meet individual needs.

Understanding the Lifestyle of the Travelling Community

Description:

This one-day event is suitable for those with contact with Gypsy and Traveller groups and for anyone whose work impacts on Gypsies and Travellers to explore the fundamental differences between different travelling communities. It is of particular benefit for Councillors, Planners, Social Inclusion Officers,
Education and Health Workers.

Aim:

To learn about the issues and implications of working with different Gypsy & Traveller groups (including Romany, Irish Travellers, Show People, Bargees and New Travellers) by understanding the cultures, histories and traditions.

Content:

  • Gypsy & Traveller Awareness – exploring the perceptions, myths, history, traditions, culture, ceremonies and etiquette relevant to the various Gypsy & Traveller groups
  • Gypsy & Traveller Panel – (a question and answer session) the panel will consist of representatives of different traveller groups including Romany, Irish and New Travellers
  • Animals and Fayres – the importance of and common issues regarding domestic animals and the significance of horse fayres
  • Tolerance and Acceptance – engaging with the settled community by rebuilding pre-conceived perceptions and breaking down barriers
