Many of our courses can be adapted for in-house delivery and can be specifically tailored to meet individual needs.

Sometimes due to reasons beyond our control a course has to be cancelled or postponed.  We will advise nominating officers and applicants immediately of such a decision.  Please note in exceptional circumstances we may have to make changes at short notice to the content (to reflect changes in legislation, current thinking or topical issues), timing, speakers and/or venue.

Community Leadership Awards (ILM Endorsed)

Course Duration:

Completion is expected within 3 - 12 months of starting each level

Not applicable as these awards are based on a combination of your own organisation's training events and assignments assessed by South West Councils

A suite of 3 ILM endorsed programmes that follow the natural developmental activities as Councillors and other Community Leaders become more established and experienced in their role and functions

To provide recognition of the development of skills, knowledge and experience of Councillors and others involved in community leadership as they become more established and experienced in their role and functions

The 3 programmes have been endorsed by the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) and reflect the following stages:

Introduction – Induction

Councillors attend their Council’s induction programme and are then assessed by us through a Reflective Review and Professional Discussion Interview.  (We can also offer feedback gathered from the assessments on how effective the Councillors have found the Induction programme if required)

Intermediate – Managing Meetings and Public Speaking

Councillors build on their knowledge and experience through taking a leading role in public speaking and managing meetings. These skills are enhanced through attending learning events arranged by their Council or external organisations or through carrying out their role and are then assessed by us through observation and the delivery of a presentation

Advanced – Community Leadership Case Study

Councillors develop their skills and knowledge on a specific theme such as migration, sport, housing, health, social care through attending formal learning events arranged by their Council or external organisations and are then assessed by us through a case-study project

Candidates can work progressively through each stage, or, if they have sufficient experience, can enter the programme at a level appropriate to them.
